I am a 1st generation Haitian American. Both my parents came from Haiti to NY in the 1960's. My father fought in Vietnam and became an Engineer with a Masters from NYU. My mother worked on Madison Ave. for Conde Nast publications. Both of their parents, my grandparents had great lives in Haiti. My maternal grandfather (Louis Monfleury)owned a Grocery Store in Port au Prince. My maternal grandfather (André Lamothe)was Mayor of Petion-Ville. Our families left not because they were uneducated, unskilled or poor but because of political unrest. They left for the safety of their families, losing everything & having to start all over. Can't be more woke & sad!
